Walvis Bay – Namibia
9th April 2014
Today Geoffrey and I parted company - he
went on an excursion entitled Living Desert and I just wandered around the
town. It was so hot yesterday that I
didn’t think I would be able to cope with three hours in the desert with high
temperatures.
Geoffrey’s journey commenced with a drive
north up the coast passing many seaside developments. We then pulled off the coast road and our
convoy, consisting of six 4x4 vehicles, stopped to deflate the tyres before we
ventured into the desert.
We then drove into the desert over the sand
dunes, stopping periodically for our rangers to jump out looking for
wildlife. They were not always
successful.
However, they found a nocturnal type of
lizard, a gecko, a desert beetle, a chameleon and finally a sidewinder
snake.
After three enjoyable hours we set off at
speed over the sand dunes, where occasionally our driver had to turn off the
air conditioning so that he had full power to get up and over the dunes. We stopped briefly on top to view where the
dunes ran into the sea.
We then returned to the coast road and
pulled on to the beach where a welcome glass of champagne and cheese nibbles
were available, whilst the drivers too the vehicles to a garage to re-inflate
the tyres. An end of a very pleasant
excursion not as hot as yesterday due to there being a nice sea breeze.
Whilst Geoffrey was on his tour Doreen went
into the town to spend Geoffrey’s money!!!
