Cape Town
6th April 2014
Today we woke up early and opened the
curtains to see a magnificent view of Table Mountain, which unfortunately we
did not have time to visit as we had arranged an excursion down the Cape
Peninsular to the Cape of Good Hope.
Our journey took us along the Atlantic coast
admiring the spectacular views. We then
climbed up the mountain and crossed over via Chapmans Peak and as we came down
the other side we could see the views of Fishoek, the area where Wendy and Luiz
live, with magnificent views of the beach and the mountains behind.
As we approached Cape Point we drove into
the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, where we saw Baboons, Bushbuck and
Ostriches, walking freely along the dramatic coastline.
Our coach then drove up to Cape Point where
we were to catch a funicular railway to the top of the point. On arriving we were advised that the
funicular was not working and the only way up was via a long windy path. Doreen decided against this walk and decided
to view the shop, whilst Geoffrey climbed the path to the top to see the
magnificent views from the viewing platform.
When he arrived he was faced with a further 120 steps to the top of the
Point, where the lighthouse is located.
After an hour admiring the views we drove
to Boulders Beach, where we had a very nice fish lunch, before visiting the
penguin colony a little further up the beach.
Here we saw many penguins sitting on their nests, and we actually saw a
penguin lay an egg, before collapsing on top of the nest, quite a sight.
We continued up the East Coast (Indian
Ocean), before heading in land to our final stop at the wonderful Kirstenbosch
Botanical Gardens. Unfortunately, time
was short and we only had half an hour walk around (like trying to see Kew Gardens in half an hour, an
impossible task).
We can honestly say that we were very
impressed with South Africa, its magnificent coastline, mountain views,
wildlife, flora and fauna. Well worthy
of another visit.
