Milford Sound - New Zealand

3rd March – Milford Sound, New Zealand

We had a restless night as we sailed across the Tasman Sea in winds up to Force 10 and a sea state – rough to very rough and despite that we rose early at 8.15am to see the ship edge its way into the narrow entrance of Milford Sound.  After the wet and windy night the skies were beautifully clear but the temperature has definitely dropped, so we dressed in our warm clothes and walked around the Sun Deck taking in the beautiful views of the Milford Sound.

We had visited Milford Sound on our trip to New Zealand in 2008.  However, our ship towered over the small pleasure boats that we had used before.  The ship sailed as far as it could up the Sound before doing a slow pirouette so that everyone could get good views even from their cabins.

We watched as the small pleasure boats went under the spectacular waterfalls as we had done in 2008.  Needless to say our ship was too big to do the same.

After a pleasant two hours the ship turned and sailed out of the Sound (which is actually a fjord) back into the very rough Tasman Sea for our onward journey to Dunedin, our next port of call tomorrow.
