Puerto Montt

2nd February – Puerto Montt

Puerto Montt is the main gateway to the country’s spectacular lake district in the foothills of the Andes.  The port was a tender port and we had an exciting rough trip from ship to shore, before we joined our coach to the Todos los Santos Lake, (known as the Emerald Lake).  Here we boarded a catamaran for a forty five minute trip around the lake with spectacular views of the snowcapped Osorno Volcano.

After leaving the lake we went to the Petrohue Falls to view the spectacular green falls and rapids.

En route back to Puerto Montt we stopped at the German Club lakeside restaurant for an extremely good salmon luncheon.

To complete our day our next stop was Puerto Varas on Llanquihue Lake for a chance to tour the shops and markets, where Doreen found many knitted Alpaca scarves etc to purchase.

This was an extremely successful day following the disaster of yesterday and we revised our opinion of Chile.  We had, of course, to return to the ship by tender which due to the rough sea took two attempts to dock alongside the ship.  However, we were rewarded by an airshow taking place over the ship, culminating in a fly pass by the Chilean “red arrows”.
