1st February – Chacabuco
We were full of anticipation as we
approached Chacabuco as it was our first landfall for five days, and the
weather appeared to be improving..
Chacabuco, for those who do not know, is tucked deep amongst the Patagonian
Fjords and it promised so much.
Unfortunately, the day did not live up to
expectations, as our tour involved an hour and half drive to a town called
Coyhaique for a twenty minute shopping expedition, around the overpriced
handicraft market (ten stalls). After a
brief stop for refreshments we returned towards the port, on the way stopping
at the Rio Simpson National Reserve which consisted of a hundred metre walk
down to the riverside and a visit to a very small wooden shack that housed a
small “museum”.
All in all not a very enjoyable day, we
were keen to return to the ship and get on our way.
