Rio de Janeiro - Sugar Loaf Mountain

Rio de Janeiro – 19th January
Sugar Loaf Mountain

This morning our alarm woke us up at 6.00am for the sail in to Rio, to view Christ the Redeemer at dawn.  However, unfortunately there was low cloud and the statue was shrouded in cloud.

This morning’s excursion was a trip up the famous Sugar Loaf Mountain with panoramic views over Rio de Janeiro.  Unfortunately this entailed taking two cable cars to the top.  After a short drive through Rio we arrived at the first cable car.  Regrettably there was a short delay, which they said was due to a breakdown in the ticket machine, but Doreen was convinced there was a problem with the cable car.  After a short delay we were on our way.

Doreen and a fellow passenger went into a group prayer session half-way up the first lift.

Once we reached the top the views were magnificent, although, Christ the Redeemer on Corcovado Mountain was still shrouded in cloud.

After an enjoyable hour, taking in the views, we went back down in the cable cars to join our coach for a drive to the world famous Cococabana and Ipanema Beaches, where Geoffrey went off to explore the local sights!
