Rio de Janeiro – 19th January
Christ the Redeemer, Corcovado Mountain
Following the brief stop at the beach we
went for lunch at a restaurant specializing in the famous Brazilian BBQ for a
light lunch! The BBQ consisted of a
beautiful Buffet of many tasty salad
starters. We then returned to our table
where the waiters constantly came round with various BBQ meats, including
sausages, chicken, port, lamb, beef – rare, medium and well done forms of
sirloin steak and fillet steak, finally ending with a whole fillet….. This was
quite some BBQ.
We then staggered to our coach to drive to
the funicular train station to catch our train up the Corcovado Mountain, which
took 25 minutes. However, when we
reached the summit Christ the Redeemer was still shrouded in cloud. We joined the other two hundred people
staring into the cloud, waiting for the odd glimpses of the statue.
Geoffrey was very fortunate as there was a
very brief break in the clouds which enabled him to take this picture of Christ
the Redeemer, before the cloud closed in again.
As if the statue was taunting us when we
reached the bottom of the funicular we looked up the mountain just as Christ
the Redeemer broke through the clouds.
We returned to the ship exhausted after our
nine hour day for dinner and then joined the sail away party at 9.30 on the
open deck and again we were taunted by the statue, because as the ship pulled
off the berth the clouds cleared and we could see the floodlit statue waving us
goodbye.
