23rd January – Montevideo
Punta del Este Resort.
After our late night last night, we didn’t
get to bed until 1.00am, we were up at 6.00am to catch the coach for an early
start for a 2 hours journey to the Punta del Este Resort. This is one of the most famous seaside
resorts of South America, and has been the playground to the rich and famous,
with past visitors such as Rockefeller and Tony Curtis.
En route we stopped to see Casapueblo,
which housed a Uruguayan artist, named Carlos Paez Vilaro The house is now a museum and art
gallery. We also stopped at Fundacion
Ralli, a private museum which houses many sculptures and paintings, including
works by Salvador Dali.
We eventually arrived at Punta del Este and
went down to the marina area for an excellent luncheon. Following this we had one hours free time to
wander around the upmarket shops (including Valentino, Gottex and many
others). Needless to say I didn’t spend
any money.
All too soon it was time to return to our
ship, and en route we passed through heavy rain, but the sun was shining again
by the time we got back to the ship.
So all in all we were very impressed with
Montevideo and glad we had the opportunity of spending two days there.
