24th March
San Francisco – Day 3
Our final day in San Francisco – we had
hoped to visit Alcatraz. However, after
making enquiries with the Concierge we were advised that trips were fully
booked for the next three days, so we decided to catch the ferry across the bay
to Sausalito, a place we visited on our Alaskan trip and liked very much, being
an attractive Mediterranean style resort.
After strolling around quaint shops,
galleries and boutiques, we found a riverside restaurant specializing in crab
and sea food, where we had a light lunch!!
On leaving the restaurant we were admiring
a very large, about 3 foot high, money tree, growing out in the open, when a
lady approached us and we started chatting about Sausalito and its history and
she walked with us back towards the ferry.
People seem very friendly and wanted to chat with us – was it because we
were British or was it just their normal way.
We caught the 3.30 ferry back to San
Francisco, but were not allowed to board until the cyclists had boarded (all
200 of them!!!). Apparently it is a
tradition on Sunday for the locals to hire bikes (or use their own) and cycle
from town, across the Golden Gate Bridge and down in to Sausalito and then
catch the ferry back to town. On the
trip back the ferry went close to Alcatraz, the nearest Geoffrey was going to
get to it.
We again caught the street car back up to
the centre of town for Doreen to get her final fix of shopping at the Westfield
Shopping Center. (Bloomingdales and Nordstrom).
However, Geoffrey was intrigued with the circular escalators in
Nordstrom.
Tomorrow we fly home, a ten hour flight, at
the end of a long but very enjoyable holiday.
We are now ready for home to see our family and friends and to have a
rest.
