Cruising Yakutat Bay and College Fjord

Cruising Yakutat Bay – 14th May

Today is a day at sea with a twist. At midday our ship steamed into Yakutat Bay, carefully winding its way between the ice and icebergs that littered the entrance. Eventually the captain decided he was near enough to the glacier and cut his engines and slowly rotated the ship through 360 degrees, so that every one could get good views of the glacier and surrounding areas. After an hour the captain slowly steamed out of the bay. A truly magnificent afternoon, surely it can’t get any better than this.

Cruising College Fjord – 15th May

How wrong we were. We thought yesterday could not be bettered but today we cruised into College Fjord passing not one glacier but nine glaciers, before again stopping in front of the huge Harvard Glacier, lingering in front of it for an hour and taking in the views and spotting the wildlife, namely seals and sea otters and the occasional bald eagle and mountain goat.

As you can see from the photographs of yesterday and today, the weather has been tremendous, although temperatures only reached 7 degrees. The sun shone and showed off the scenery to its best. We are advised by the locals that this weather is extremely rare for this time of year. How fortunate we are.
